Wat Phra Kaew, also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is the most sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand. Situated within the historic Grand Palace complex in Bangkok’s Old Town, it houses the Emerald Buddha (Phra Kaew Morakot), a highly revered statue carved from a single block of jade.
Unlike many other temples in Bangkok, Wat Phra Kaew does not have resident monks. Instead, it serves as a royal chapel and a ceremonial site for important state and religious events. The temple complex is richly decorated with golden stupas, intricate murals depicting the Ramakien (Thai Ramayana), and ornate mosaic-covered structures.
The dress code is strictly enforced — visitors must wear modest clothing (no sleeveless tops, short skirts, or ripped trousers). Due to its significance and popularity, the temple can become crowded, especially during peak tourist hours.
Wat Phra Kaew is typically visited together with the Grand Palace and is considered a must-see landmark for first-time visitors to Bangkok.
