Wat Pho, officially known as Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimonmangkalaram Ratchaworamahaviharn, is one of Bangkok’s most iconic and historically significant Buddhist temples, located directly south of the Grand Palace in the city’s Rattanakosin historic district.
The temple complex is best known for its magnificent Reclining Buddha statue, an enormous gilded image measuring 46 meters long and 15 meters high, whose intricately inlaid mother-of-pearl feet display 108 auspicious symbols. Beyond this signature attraction, Wat Pho contains hundreds of Buddha images, richly adorned chedis, ornate murals, and sprawling cloisters that reflect classical Thai architecture and religious artistry.
Founded centuries ago and later extensively expanded under King Rama III, Wat Pho is also considered Thailand’s earliest center of public education. Within its grounds today, visitors can encounter the renowned Thai Traditional Medical and Massage School—the birthplace of authentic Thai massage—where both heritage and holistic wellness continue to be taught and practiced.
A visit to Wat Pho offers a deep immersion into Thai cultural and spiritual heritage, blending art, history, and contemplative atmosphere, making it a must-see for anyone exploring Bangkok’s historic heart.
